About ABC Math

I do things a bit differently...

Is your child struggling with math?

Mrs. G, math tutor

When it becomes obvious that your child is struggling with math, some time has lapsed since the difficulty first began.

The signs are easy to spot once you know what they are.

The child:

  • does not want to go to school;
  • never admits to having homework;
  • claims to have no homework;
  • cries or feints crying;
  • daydreams, hums or doodles when no one is watching;
  • is reluctant to show their report card;
  • complains about other students;
  • complains about the teacher;

and the list goes on.

Imagine how that child feels inside!

“I’m stupid.”

No amount of kind and loving coaxing or affirmation the student gets, it is never enough to fix the problem.

What the student needs is remediation.

Extra support at school is not usually a good use of time because "extra" is similar to the work the student did in class.

Worst of all, children in this predicament are victims, feel embarrassed and are the first ones to be bullied.

What they need is the first feeling of success!

The closest person to provide that help is a parent.

You may hire a tutor, but they usually give educational curriculum material which does not solve the problem.

Also, it is expensive!

I do things a bit differently...

I do a short assessment (less than 5 minutes).

That tells me what the student knows and does not know.

Whether in person or online, I begin with what the student knows and move forward from that point.

The student usually gets an immediate feeling of relief.

It never surprised me to find the student waiting for me at the door for the second class or to comment if I am late.
